Real Talk.
Katie and I have been on this weight loss journey for three months now, chugging right along. We were counting calories and losing weight and then recently incorporated the gym work outs...and the number on the scale started creeping up pound-by-pound.
I know everyone says muscle weighs more than fat (which by the way is not true because a pound is a pound...the one pound of muscle just takes up less space than one pound of fat does). People were telling me that my muscles were retaining water because I was breaking them down during my work outs. I am not taking enough water in so I'm retaining and blah. blah. blah. I was down 18 pounds and then suddenly I was only down 14 pounds which made me sad pants.
I know that I'm not sucking it in now when I button my jeans, so the number means nothing, right?
But then it was potluck week and I was starving and those damn numbers made me feel like my hard work was nothing more than hard work so we skipped out on the gym for like four days and guess what? The number on the scale came back down, back to the 18 pounds I can't seem to get past. I'm pretty sure my body was just so happy to be getting some food, it struck a deal with the scale.
I ate like I had been stranded on a desert island and the extent of my work out was carrying in more groceries. And today when I got out of bed my back hurt again...really bad. My back hasn't hurt for a few months now. I've got a headache that I can't shake...I haven't had a headache for a few months now. In a matter of a week I'm going backwards and my body is throwing up road blocks.

So I found some websites and blogs where people were talking about this phenomenon and started getting some inspiration from them. Lots of girls who look so much better than they used to but now weigh a lot more. So I went out and bought a measuring tape and now instead of watching the scale, we are going to watch our measurements and our Biggest Loser style pictures.
Start the arm curls now Katie because I might need some help hoisting my big ass back up onto that wagon Monday...

I'm ignoring the scales too. As far as this year goes, weight loss has been a failure for me, and now I'm eating my own yummy home made mince pies, (I think you call them mince tarts?). So I'll be starting fresh next year and my tests will be whether or not I can comfortably sit down in my buttoned up jeans, my goal is to be able to put on AND do up the skirt I love most but haven't worn in eight years.
I'm so glad I found you blog! I need the motivation like never before. My friend and I recently starting documenting our journey towards weight loss and healthy living at www.whatifoundwhilewalkingaround.com check it out when you have time :) I'll definitly be checking back with you to follow your progress! Good luck! Get back on that wagon!!!
I check out both the scale and the measurements. But I do know that I'm not at 156 (praise JEEBUS) and I've eaten fast food 5 times this week. Explain THAT. :/
But I know that I'm more happy when my pants are falling off of my bubble ass than what the scale says. If the pants are getting too big, it's always a good sign.
Good for you- forget that scale! I get so annoyed when different exercise and health advice refers to BMI (body mass index) to gauge how "healthy" you are. BMI only takes your height and weight into consideration and if you're really muscular, of course you're going to weigh more- that doesn't mean you're less healthy! Measuring your actual percent body fat makes way more sense. If you want to track your percent fat to see how you're progressing, you just need to do a bioelectrical impedance device- which sounds really fancy and expensive, but it's not- and it can quickly and easily tell you what your percent body fat is. I think I bought one from Meijer in the sporting goods section a few years ago for less than $20 and a lot of scales have them built in too now. Good luck!!
